Bail Reform is a huge part of the auto-theft problem. Car thieves are arrested, set free, and return to the same neighborhoods to steal more cars.

‘…Leadership within the NYPD has pinned repeat offenders in part on bail reform laws, which now prohibit pretrial detention for most misdemeanors and some nonviolent felonies…’

I do not think it is such a mystery. Prior to the pandemic the Bronx had an unemployment rate of about 6.5%. The pandemic caused the unemployment rate to more than double to 14%, but currently the Bronx unemployment rate is 20%. Stealing cars and car parts represent quick ways to get cash. I am not in any way a crime expert, except as a “consumer.” Living in the Bronx for most of my adult life, car part thefts were a fact of life. [I remember once complaining to my eldest son that I wish they would stop stealing parts of my car and just get it over with and steal the whole thing. His response? “Why would they do that? This way they get to steal your car multiple times!]
Perversely, once crack hit the streets, theft of cars and car parts went down. It remained down all these years, perhaps due to improvements in employment. I cannot agree with our reader from Staten island. From my perspective, ELIMINATE BAIL, except for the most serious offenses and pass a damn stimulus package.

Today my friend’s car start with heavy noise and we took his car to the mechanic guess what? Some one stole car’s exhaust and oxygen sensor. Nypd should install camera all over the place. Other wise it won’t stop!
