FYI: Almost a third of Chinatown residents lived below the poverty line as of the 2000 Census, compared to 21 percent of the city as a whole, according to a new profile prepared by the Census Information Center of the Asian American Federation of New York. The neighborhood profile includes detailed data on income levels, education and English proficiency, among other information. It found that 45 percent of Chinatown adults have not completed the ninth grade, compared with 15 percent of the city overall. And 42 percent of adults either spoke no English or answered that they did not speak it well, compared with 26 percent of the city overall.
