FYI: The Landmarks Preservation Commission plans to raise $1.05 million by charging fees for building in historic districts and landmark designated areas. Preservation advocate Simeon Bankoff of the Historic Districts Council is lobbying the City Council to stop the commission from levying the fees. Bankoff argues the fees would discourage neighborhoods from applying for status as historic districts and discourage owners from applying for proper permits. Moreover, he argues the $1.05 million expected from the fees is unrealistic, noting that the agency hadn’t even been expected to raise revenue before the budget crunch. A public hearing on the rule change is scheduled for July 8. [6/25]
