FYI: Speaker Gifford Miller will hold a press conference this afternoon announcing the certain passage of a bill barring shelters from turning away domestic violence victims because they have not filed a police report. The Council is also expected to pass a second bill blocking people convicted of domestic violence crimes from getting permits for rifles or shotguns. Miller and the bills’ sponsors, Councilmembers Bill DeBlasio and David Yassky, left off the table an initiative broadening an existing law that requires employers to accommodate domestic violence victims’ special needs. The mayor’s office strongly objected to that plan when Yassky floated it this summer. [12/4/02]
