After dropping the year before, affordable housing production was up again during the 12-month span that ended June 30, officials said Thursday—what advocates say is a welcomed boost but still a far cry from what’s needed as the city struggles to address record-high levels of homelessness.
Over the next 100 days, NYCHA will hold engagement sessions so Nostrand Houses tenants can learn more about each of the ballot choices. On Nov. 8, the 30-day voting process will begin. Residents can vote online or by mail during the first 20 days, while the last 10 days will take place in-person.
The bills were part of a larger legislative package related to rules around lead paint, and advocates are hoping to see the City Council bring related bills to a vote by the beginning of August.
A fight over whether to demolish and rebuild apartments at the Chelsea-Elliott and Fulton Houses in lower Manhattan echoes a larger debate over how NYCHA should raise funds for its deteriorating housing stock, and how much of a say tenants will have in those plans.
NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt said the Preservation Trust is essential to helping NYCHA get “tremendous capital needs” and aiding residents to getting quality repairs. The first development to vote on whether to join the Trust is expected to be chosen this summer.
While the number of NYCHA campuses that saw elevator outages between January and April of this year was the same as the year before, the total number of incidents—9,904—declined by more than 12 percent, and NYCHA’s response time for repairs improved.
As the city faces dual affordable housing and homelessness crises, City Limits asked the candidates’ running in Tuesday’s primary for their stance on a number of key related issues. “You think about a $106 billion budget—we’re asking for $400 million with an M,” Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa said at Thursday’s rally. “NYCHA tenants deserve more and we’re going to continue to stand with you until we see a budget that reflects the dignity that you have long deserved.”
