City Limits’ investigation of the obstacles facing crime victims and witness seeking to move within NYCHA and coverage of the 2017 election have been recognized by the New York Press Club.
Ese Olumhense’s September 2017 story about the New York City Housing Authority’s emergency transfer program won Best Feature-Internet in the club’s annual journalism awards contest. That project was originated and supported by the Investigative Fund and its Ida B. Wells Fellowship Program, overseen at the time by former City Limits deputy editor Kelly Virella.
A team of journalists—editor Jarett Murphy, photographer Adi Talwar, then-staff writer Abigail Savitch-Lew and contributors Kizzy Cox, Jonathan Gomez and Elizabeth Michaelson Monaghan won the Best Political Coverage-Internet category for “Election 2017,” City Limits’ wall-to-wall, soup-to-nuts reporting on last year’s municipal elections. Our reporting was part of a larger partnership with Gotham Gazette and WNYC.
City Limits has been honored by the Press Club in the past: In 2016, the club recognized its housing coverage and a report on involuntary medication in city hospitals.
Earlier this spring, City Limits was awarded the Silurian Medal for science/health reporting for our series on disparities in life expectancy among city neighborhoods.
City Limits journalists are supported by a team including executive director Fran Reilly, development manager Adina Berliant, social media consultant Victoria Edwards and youth program manager Jeanmarie Evelly.
