FYI: Plans to hike SUNY tuition by as much as $1,000 a year are unfair because the school’s fees have gone up 128 percent since the last tuition increase in 1995, says the New York Public Interest Research Group. Governor Pataki is expected to propose raising SUNY and CUNY tuition in today’s speech before the legislature. NYPIRG estimates that students in SUNY’s 24 undegrad institutions have seen fees jump from an average of $435 in 1995 to $990 in 2002. Full-time students at SUNY’s four university centers went from paying $532 on average in 1995 to $1,260 in 2002. [1/8/03]
