Kathy Hochul’s first State of the State proposal included sweeping plans for affordable housing, free legal assistance for low-income tenants and sending social workers into the subways to conduct homeless outreach. But the governor failed to address other high-profile issues, like the end of pandemic eviction protections and the “Good Cause” eviction bill.
“From the vantage point of future decades, his many flaws and huge mistakes—all so apparent to us who have watched his day-to-day mayoralty—are unlikely to be as visible as the major decisions he made which, in many cases, were pretty sound and made the city a better place.”
The incident came on the heels of another violent encounter between police and New Yorkers who were camping out on a Lower Manhattan sidewalk near Tompkins Square Park Nov. 10.

‘When it comes to unpacking the harm of police misconduct, the people who were convicted are just the part of the puzzle we see most easily. For the people who were not convicted, the harm remains, with no recourse.’
“Until today, the NYPD has been using private information from sealed arrests in over a dozen of their interconnected surveillance databases, and has trained its officers that it is okay to violate the law,” said Niji Jain, an attorney at the Bronx Defenders.

Since June, the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), which took over inspecting duties from the police this year, has conducted 1,508 street vending inspections and issued 424 tickets, slightly surpassing NYPD’s three-month average number of civil citations prior to the pandemic.
In a motion filed on Thursday, lawyers at the Bronx Defenders say that police department training documents may be instructing officers to illegally use sealed arrest records.
“The thing about the CCRB is it’s a volunteer job, and you basically run the agency, even though you don’t get the support,” the mayoral hopeful said of her year-long stint at the Civilian Complaint Review Board.
