“Yes, we are seeing more people on the streets, and many of them are in crisis. But unless we deal with the root causes of homelessness, we are just going to be looking at a revolving door of incarceration and hospitalizations that only exacerbate the problem.”
Thousands in New York City rely on an unofficial system of public commuter vans to get around—one that is not part of the MTA. These vehicles—better known as dollar vans—have served riders across New York City for half a century, but their future is unclear.
The goal is to bring more New Yorkers to one of the city’s commercial hubs, Midtown South, by adding up to 9,700 homes, including 2,900 affordable units and close to 800 converted office spaces.
“There is no comprehensive network of treatment courts in New York, and those that do exist are woefully underutilized. Far more people should be getting the genuine care and treatment that I got.”
