The speed cameras and red light cameras are more of a revenue scam than a safety issue.

this is absolute nonsense. the statistics quoted in the article you’re commenting on make clear that in fact those cameras are very much about safety.

Yes, they take revenue from hard working city employees who could otherwise get out of a ticket by flashing their badge, PBA card or parking placard.

Honestly, you only get a ticket if you go 10mph+ over the limit. If someone goes 36mph in a 25 zone, they deserve a ticket.

Nyc101 you are right. The cameras are angled to not capture the traffic lights in the images that are mailed to the alleged red light offender.

Instead there is a meter reading at the top of two pictures indicating what status the light was in when your car was not in the intersection and what status the light was in when your car was in the intersection.

I’ve seen these cameras go off many times prematurely and I’ve seen them not go off when they should have. All it would take is to have the camera angled enough to capture the light. But maybe doing that would reveal that many drivers didn’t take the light.

So I’m for the cameras but a law needs to be put in place to making sure that the cameras capture the actual lights.

    I wholeheartedly agree.

Not mentioned: cameras record speed and red light violations with objectivity and without bias or prejudice. Cameras don’t extend “professional courtesy” depending on who’s committing these violations. If you don’t want to be cited for speeding or blowing through red lights, it’s easy: don’t speed, and stop for red lights.

The cameras go off prematurely quite often. And they’re not angled to capture the actual light which would prove absolutely if there’s a violation. It’s purposely set up that way.

Stop the insanity. The law will sunset all because of Sen. Felder. The votes were there in committee before the session ended and Felder would not release the bill.
Just look at the risk, confusion and public safety danger one person can cause.
Vote Sen. Felder out Thursday, September 13

Many NY state Senators and Assembly Members are aware that speed cameras are for-profit rackets that depend upon deliberately mis-engineered speed limits to create profits – $50+ million dollars worth for NYC. With luck, this for-profit racket will never restart.

I agree red light cameras should be at every intersection because running a red light is very dangerous. Speed cameras on the other hand is just a way for the city to milk money out of their residents. Better to have security cameras up at these spots to review traffic accidents. And only at hot spots. My 2 cents.

    Will bikers also be cited?
