As we reported yesterday in the start of an ongoing series of stories about the library system, branch libraries are increasingly important to a number of communities in the city: Parents and teens who worry about finding a safe after-school spot, low-income people who need access to computers and the Internet, immigrants looking to learn English and others.

But the libraries continue to fight for funds just to maintain their current level of services, let alone tap into their potential to play an even bigger role in connecting people to jobs, education and—oh yeah—books.
