The Bronx Sports Column (New to BxNN!)

Our ace photographer, Adi Talwar, took these photos at DeWitt Clinton’s thrilling 60-56 victory over down-the-street northwest borough rival Bronx Science, on Wednesday afternoon at Bronx Science’s home gym. The loss put Science into a tie with Walton Campus for first place in the Bronx A West Division. Both teams are 12-6 this year. For Clinton, the victory was huge. At 11-7, they are within one game of first, with two to play. Meanwhile, Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy pulled within two games of the top spot in the divsion, at 10-8.

Bronx Foodie: Carrot Cake

I’m a huge fan of cakes that are made from more than just flour, butter, and sugar. I love breads and cakes with actual fruit and nuts inside. This week I made carrot cake as a nice treat during all of this cold weather. It was great to feel the warmth from the stove and to smell cinnamon wafting through my house on a freezing cold night. I hope some of you jumped on board the Bronx Foodie New Year’s challenge to cook 50% of your meals at home.

Bronx News Roundup, Feb. 4

Usually, I enjoy my 25 minute walk to work every morning. Today, I skated, slipped and shimmied my way to the Keeper’s House, aka BxNN headquarters on the Williamsbridge Oval in Norwood. On the plus side, I was heartened by a team of folks helping a man pry his car out of an iced-in predicament and enjoyed seeing the sun hitting untouched patches of snow, making the surface look like glazed marshmallow frosting. Now, I’m hungry.Today’s forecast calls for clouds and a high of 34 degrees, with snow possible in the middle of the night and into Saturday morning. Super Bowl Sunday is supposed to be sunny and above freezing!

Bronx Crime Watch: Medical Center Burglarized

Perry Ave. Medical Center was broken into sometime last night (Photos by R. Sander)By RACHEL SANDERA break-in was reported this morning at the Perry Avenue Family Medical Center, on Perry Avenue off of E. 204th Street. The thief or thieves made off with laptops, security cameras, medical supplies, and $80 to $90 in cash, according to Dr. Kishore Ahuja and his wife, Dr. Rita Ahuja, who have been running the center for the past 30 years and say they’ve never had any problems before. Sources say the robbery took place sometime last night.Phone lines at the facility were disconnected, cabinets were smashed, and doors were taken off their hinges. Televisions and desktop computers were not stolen, however, which lead Dr. Rita Ahuja to think that this may have been an act of vandalism by someone holding a grudge, she said. Police visited the center this morning, and detectives were on their way to investigate, the Ahujas said.
