George Calvert, founder of Hope Community Inc., a nonprofit housing organization, passed away July 17 at age 76. Reverend Calvert served as an admired and enthusiastic pastor in East Harlem, first at East Harlem Protestant Parish and later the Church of the Living Hope. But, in housing circles, he is best known as the longtime executive director of Hope Community, an influential group that fought to turn hundreds of abandoned buildings into affordable housing for Harlem residents. A devoted husband and father, Rev. Calvert was also dedicated to his Andes, New York community after moving there in 1997. He worked with the Andes Gazette, local chamber of commerce, and as a volunteer medical technician for the Andes Emergency Squad. Contributions in his name can be sent to Church of the Living Hope, 161 East 104 St., NY 10029; Andes Presbyterian Church, PO Box 299, Andes, 13731; or Andes Emergency Squad, Andes, NY 13731. (E.
