FYI: Scammers are already trying to cash in on President Bush’s proposal to offer work visas to undocumented immigrants. The Polish community daily Nowy Dziennik reported last week that a rumor has begun circulating within the city’s Polish, Chinese, Latino and Caribbean neighborhoods that immigration officials are compiling a waiting list of applications that will be expedited when the program begins. Scammers are charging as much as $100 to help workers put their names on the nonexistent list. Immigration activists say the same scam has cropped up in Boston and Los Angeles. They say most immigrant workers don’t follow policy news closely enough to know that Bush’s proposal is still long from becoming a law. [1/29/04]
