Barriers to Getting Buff?
Access to Exercise in the Bronx

ShareTweet EmailPrint

The chronic health woes of the Bronx, the borough with the highest rates of diabetes and obesity, are usually blamed on diet. But soda isn’t the only determinant of health; sit-ups matter, too. City Limits’ 2014-2015 Bronx Investigative Internship Program looked at how access to private gyms, bike lanes and physical education in schools affected the borough. The work was generously supported by the Simon Bolivar Foundation.

Jarrett Murphy and Katherine Guerrero | May 12, 2015

Does the Bronx work out less than Manhattan because it has far fewer gyms? Or does it have fewer gyms because it works out less?

The College Now Program at Hostos College donated the indispensable resource of classroom space. We’re also grateful to New York Community Trust, which supports all our Bronx reporting.

City Limits uses investigative journalism through the prism of New York City to identify urban problems, examine their causes, explore solutions, and equip communities to take action.

Founded in 1976 in the midst of New York’s fiscal crisis, City Limits exists to inform democracy and equip citizens to create a more just city. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by foundation support, ad sponsorship and donations from readers.
