Andrew Yang conceded Tuesday night.
“I am someone who traffics in what’s happening by the numbers and I am not going to be the next mayor of New York City based on the numbers that have come in tonight. I am conceding this race,” Yang told supporters.
“We’re trying the best we can.” A poll site in Queensbridge was missing its Spanish- and Chinese-language interpreters Tuesday morning. Workers handed out translated info cards instead, while the Korean-language interpreter was using Google Translate to assist voters.
‘For me it’s not about choice—I know who I want to vote for and I voted for them,’ one voter told City Limits Tuesday. Other said they like RCV, and that it prompted them do more research about the candidates than they normally would.
The winner of the primary will go on to compete on the ballot in November’s general election—which in a city that leans as heavily Democratic as New York means most seats will be filled by whoever wins in June.
The primary race in Queens will give the GOP a chance to reclaim the seat last held by the party in 2009.
Some 11 candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for Brooklyn’s 40th Council District, comprising parts of Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Kensington, Midwood, Prospect Park, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.
“When voters voted for ranked-choice voting, we voted for it with the understanding that there’d be two years of city-wide education, which never came,” said Christian Amato, who has been polling Bronx residents on their awareness of the ranked-choice system.
