The Bronx saw the largest number of new affordable housing units under Mayor Bloomberg’s New Housing Marketplace Plan, according to data released recently by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
The data (obtained by contributor Norman Oder) indicate that some 19,000 new units were built in the Bronx under the plan.
Mayor Bloomberg first launched the NHMP in 2002 with a goal of 65,000 units, expanded it in 2005 to a target of 165,000 and revamped in 2008 to focus less on new construction and span 11 years rather than 10.
According to the new numbers, Manhattan saw the most rehabilitation or preservation of units, with 39,000 reported.
Overall, Manhattan and the Bronx received greater shares of affordable housing than their share of the city’s population, and the other boroughs received less.
