Among them: “Bronx Princess,” the story of 17-year-old Rocky, who leaves to Bronx to reunite with her father, a chief in Ghana, West Africa. Mobile Veterinary Van Reaches Milestone

Bronx pet owners outside The Toby Project’s mobile surgical van (photo courtesy of The Toby Project)The Toby Project, a nonprofit initiative that provides low-cost spay and neuter services for pet owners across the city by way of its mobile surgical van, performed its 5,000th surgery last month since its inception in 2009.The group, founded by Manhattan veterinarian Dr. Andrew Kaplan, was featured in an issue of the Norwood News this summer. Its goal is to bring veterinary services to low-income neighborhoods, including many in the Bronx, where pet owners are often unable to afford the cost of spaying their animals.”The overpopulation of pets is responsible for the deaths of as many as 15,000 healthy pets in NYC’s municipal shelters each year because of uncontrolled breeding and the lack of enough homes for all of them,” a press release from the group reads. Free Flu Shot Vouchers for District 14 Residents

For those of you who want to avoid the flu this winter season (and don’t we all?), Councilman Fernando Cabrera’s office is providing vouchers for free flu shots to 100 residents in his district on a first come, first serve basis. To be eligible, you must be over 18 years of age, uninsured, and live in the 14th City Council District-i.e. Fordham, Kingsbridge, and Morris Heights. Here’s some information from the press release: “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu is a contagious respiratory illness that can result in death. People who are at high risk to develop flu conditions include; young children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions such as asthma.
