New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday sued State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr., a Bronx Democrat, for allegedly diverting to himself and his family funds from a nonprofit he helped administer.
“Mr. Espada has siphoned more than $14 million in excessive compensation and unwarranted benefits out of Soundview to enrich himself and his family,” the complaint read. “The most egregious example is a provision in Mr. Espada’s compensation package—a so-called ‘severance provision’—that is currently worth approximately $9 million.”
Espada, who faces a primary challenge this year, has blamed his political enemies for recent allegations against him.
