President Bush’s effort to give low-performing schools a boost could be a bust for kids in New York City, where program registration delays have left families without time to get their children into a program that suits their needs. And for those who do get in, a slim budget could leave students with only a few extra hours of tutoring for the entire year.
Take donated computers. Add free software. Stir gently with staff training, time-consuming customization and inevitable glitches.
After years of pushing for the construction of a few new schools in the long-unused Kingsbridge Armory–with little response from the mayor’s office–some Bronx residents recently got their first sign that their proposal could happen when Bloomberg officials said they would look into it.
