More than 3,400 volunteers – including more than 850 who give their time through corporate social responsibility programs – provided more than 35,000 hours of service in 2018, helping vulnerable older New Yorkers who participate in programs and services at the Carter Burden Network (CBN), a leader in aging services in New York City. On April 11, 2019, CBN honored the contributions of this army of dedicated volunteers at a special event during National Volunteer Week (April 7-13, 2019).
Volunteers and CBN staff attended the moving celebration which took place at the Carter Burden Gallery in Chelsea, a unique art gallery that exclusively exhibits the work of professional New York artists who are 60 years and older. The gallery is a CBN program.
William J. Dionne, Executive Director of the Carter Burden Network, said, “For more than four decades, the Carter Burden Network has been leading the way in aging services in New York City: giving voice to vulnerable seniors who otherwise may not be heard; fighting ageism; providing pioneering and innovative programs and services of the highest quality; and opening our doors to all. Fulfilling our mission is made easier with the help of the thousands of generous and dedicated New Yorkers who understand the impact of volunteerism and the importance of serving the generations that came before them. I extend my deepest thanks to all our volunteers.”
Addressing the volunteers, Dionne added, “While the time, joy and stories you’ve shared with our seniors mean so much to you, I guarantee it means even more to them.”
Carter Burden Network volunteers provide numerous and varied services, including:
• delivering meals to homebound seniors
• regularly visiting or calling homebound seniors
• serving congregate meals at Carter Burden’s senior centers
• teaching technology and art crafting classes
• doing grocery shopping
• providing “makeup and beautification” for Carter Burden’s much-anticipated annual Fashion Shows
• decorating for the holidays
• and much more
The Carter Burden Network promotes the well-being of seniors, 60 and older, through a continuum of services, advocacy, arts and culture and volunteer programs in New York City. CBN offers a
range of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups, including a one-time service day or a long-term commitment.
