FYI: Asthma hospitalization rates for kids in East Harlem plummeted 33 percent in 2002, according to new Department of Health stats, part of a dramatic 10-year decline in that neighborhood. Citywide, the rate fell to the lowest it has been since the city started collecting the data in 1984: 6 per every 1,000 kids under the age of 14. The Bronx rate was the highest, with 9.7 per 1,000 kids; Staten Island’s rate was lowest, with 2.8 per 1,000 young people. [1/13/03]
