FYI: A group of City Council members, representing a majority of the Council, are urging Speaker Gifford Miller to move on a bill that would require the city to provide translation services for clients seeking human services benefits like public assistance and Medicaid. Thirty-six of the 51 Council members singed onto a letter sent to Miller earlier this week urging him to endorse the measure, Intro 38. The bill, introduced last year, would require any human services agency that has more than 100 visitors needing translation or assistance from one of a list of native languages in a week to provide translation services. The languages include Arabic, Chinese, Creole, Korean, Russian, and Spanish. [7/10/03]
