FYI: Retail giant Gap Inc.’s founder Donald Fisher is expanding his seven-year-old South Bronx charter school experiment. Education Week reports that Fisher is pouring another $8 million into the nonprofit group that runs the South Bronx’s KIPP Academy and its 14 sister schools nationally, funding plans to spin-off 20 more around the country. Charter school advocates, including the Bush administration, champion KIPP as the leading model for reforming education in low-income communities, citing its students’ high standardized test scores. KIPP stresses long days, discipline and rewards such as vouchers for the school store. [10/30/02]
