This is completely inaccurate: “a policy shift by former Mayor Bill de Blasio in response to sellers’ longtime complaints about over-policing of their sector, predominately made up of immigrant workers.”
The “policy shift” had nothing to do with di Blasio. It was a key part of Intro #1116
The Street Vendor Modernization bill passed in 2021, a bill that was endorsed, written by and advocated for by The Street Vendor Project (SVP). The increase in enforcement is directly tied to SVP and was a totally predictable result of passing the law. All di Blasio had to do with it (he strongly opposed the bill passing) was to announce it as if it was his decision so as to virtue signal he was “helping immigrants.” In reality, SVP and the new law have made everything much worse for the very vendors in SVP that the law was pretending to help..
