This is so gross. No one deserves to live this way

This could so easily be taken care of by the tenant. I would never allow my unit to deteriorate to that condition. The world is not about pressing buttons and expecting others to take care of you.

It is not easy to remove mold and this is not the responsibility of the tenant. A landlord should want their tenants to live in a safe environment.

Are you kidding? You must be a landlord because there is no way black mold is the tenants fault, much less responsibility to treat. It’s toxic. She should put her health at risk because a incompetent slumlord? You’re out of your mind.

Wrong! As a Chief Building Inspector for 30 years, the gypsum and insulation if any has to be replaced.

It is the landlord’s issue to resolve.

Garrick- your response is VERY foolish. MOLD like THAT in an area that is NOT the bathroom is egregious and means that mold spores have permeated the sheetrock or drywall. Often this happens due to a build-up of landlord’s non-maintenance, such as not addressing pointing on a building’s exterior, or a breached membrane on the roof.

Tenants are not responsible for mold removal. Mold removal requires training, equipment, and hazmat suits. An apartment dweller or home owner should not attempt this task especially with children in the home.

Black mold can cause serious medical complications to many organ systems in your body. Painting over is not the answer and any mold remediation company is totally aware and taking advantage of situation and in the long run putting peoples health in jeopardy

Just about every city agency involved is at fault here. This black mold condition is a serious emergency. Failing to handle it properly puts both the tenant’s life at risk, and destroys our precious affordable housing stock.
The DOB inspector should report to HPD immediately, and then reinspect every 7 days until conditions are cured.
HPD should seek a 7A Administrator to remove control of the building from manifestly dangerous management.
As for the civil courts, saving our housing is a higher priority than evicting tenants so as to increase our population of homeless.
Congratulations for news accounts like these.
