Opinion: Mayor Adams, Don’t Weaken Local Law 97

The original intention behind Local Law 97 bill was noble, but it failed to consider the practical implications. The question arises: Who will bear the financial burden of this transformation? Co-op have traditionally been homes for people with modest incomes, including retirees. Imposing renovation costs in the millions of dollars on them is nothing short of devastating. Is it fair to shift the entire city’s communal responsibility onto the shoulders of the less fortunate? Environmentalists should focus their time, energy, and financial resources on assisting with these renovations and sharing the costs, rather than directing their criticism towards those who can least afford it. Let me emphasize once more that this renovation project concerns all citizens, and it should not disproportionately affect a minority of underprivileged individuals.
