Council woman Velazquez was advocating to force NYC retired workers on fixed incomes who were promised Medicare at no cost in retirement (like a deferred compensation) after years of accepting reduced wages for healthcare because the unions misused their health fund. After working for decades and then having to sue the City of NY to stop their plan from being forced upon us, and winning every single time, Velazquez pushed that retirees should just pay as a “compromise.” And if they can’t, too bad. Retirees served this city, became disabled serving this city and already paid for their benefits. No one should be stealing from retirees! On a recent call with her and the few constituents who still wanted to hear from her, she disregarded their pleas for help to sign legislation to protect them. Impacted now twice, once from the development flip and now healthcare, they lost all faith in her. In regards to caring for the ill, there are plenty of vacant office buildings that can be used for that purpose and a dedicated shuttle can transport them to the medical facility as needed.
