New York City should move to adopt thermal energy networks, which move heat in and out of multiple buildings, using water-filled pipes and highly efficient heat pumps, at neighborhood scale. They can provide affordable, clean heating, cooling, and hot water, and are much safer and healthier than gas or steam. They also don’t spew that hot air outside like conventional air conditioners, which worsens the heat island effect. There are a couple of pilot thermal energy network projects under development, but city leadership promoting rapid uptake would help both residents and building owners.
