    I agree with the third part of this (depoliticize the process). But it seems to me that the first two parts only work if people are willing to pay higher taxes to fund them.

      In a democracy we can’t depoliticize the process when it comes to issues like zoning and massive outlays of taxpayer’s money.

    The larger problem, in my opinion, is that “affordable housing” is unaffordable for most of us. Have you looked at the ranges of mandatory financial criteria for affordable housing? I would happily leave my one-bedroom for an affordable apartment. Unfortunately were I to apply I would only be eligible for an “affordeable” studio. No wonder people push back.

      Absolutely. The author doesn’t define affordable housing here. New construction is so expensive that it is impossible to build low-income housing without enormous government investment (subsidies/bonds/low-interest loans). Building market rate with MIH, for example, can allow developers to include “affordable” units for people at 115% AMI. That price is higher than market rent in many neighborhoods… Maybe stick to universal vouchers instead.
