I struggle to pay my rent right through Covid. At this moment I don’t pay as yet because I can’t find the amount. I am not working. It’s really hard

Seems to be many help wanted signs for good money. All you have to do is get out of bed to go to work.

Some people can’t afford to pay. No need to be rude. I am a New York City Substitute Teacher who barely makes $40,000 a year. My husband had a mild stroke after getting COVID. We are now relying on my paycheck which has been behind a month because the NYC DOE intentionally pays us late by two checks and the city denies us unemployment as substitutes, so we usually don’t get paid for holidays and have no benefits. So while you may think all one should do is stop being lazy, it’s so much more than that when you can’t afford to pay for basic expenses for yourself, child, and your husband. The lack of sympathy is disgusting!

I have a Tenant who could not afford to pay prior to the moratorium. I will not disclose her sources of income, however will say her co-tenant was no longer with her in the unit. Making it difficult for her to afford the unit on her own.

The monthly rent is $855.00. On March 1st 2020 this tenant paid $745.00 with the promise to pay the remaing balance on April 1st, along with her regular rent.

On March 25th after the moratorium was in place, she called me and said “I am not moving or paying rent, because Gov. Cuomo said I don’t have to”.
Her lease expired in October 2020. She is still in the unit and hasn’t paid anything.

Although her loss of household income was Not due to covid, and HER Income hasn’t changed both She and the owner have applied for rent relief.
If she does not qualify the company will file for eviction when able. That said…With or without the relief..
She will probably be living rent free for another year

    Unbelievable!

I know there are people who really need it and qualify…But it’s tenants such as this that are just taking advantage!!!

You can still apply for LRAP for the unit. I hope it works out and you get your rent.

Well written, David. I follow you on Twitter and am appreciative of your fair reporting. I’m a landlord dealing with a tenant taking advantage of the moratorium who refuses to apply for ERAP and, while I do not care or expect to receive anything, still want the moratorium to end so I can move into my house. Thanks for highlighting the important fact that ERAP provides protections against evictions for those that apply. It is wild to me that Legislators are asking so many basic questions about the program THEY wrote in the budget… We need to keep highlighting the built in protections for tenants to further the point that the moratorium does not need to be extended.

Let’s get real! I am a Landlord, we couldn’t evict because the moratorium so we went without rent for a year, then this Erap preventing from evicting, so now you go months more without receiving rent THEN you find out your ERAP might not get approved after all so way to go government you now gave tenants a free ride for almost 2 years and to top it off our rentals must be up to date on passing codes REALLY WITH WHAT MONEY??? AND let’s not forget, if you do receive Erap money you can’t evict for another year that they refuse to pay cause the government says they can’t be evicted, do the math! But don’t try to complain to the government because your voice will not be heard!!

I don’t understand it when people intentionally don’t pay the rent. Enough playing fool here. Those who have unemployment or other programs are still not paying the rent. You need to be responsible for your own life! Put your bills first! I am not obligated to host in my house some tenants who believe that they deserve it to live for free. It is stealing from the landlords. Go live with your family members for free. I am a private landlord, not your relative to support you all. I did not allow myself to buy anything to afford the property. Now it is your turn to spend less for yourslef and save more to pay your obligations to the landlords!!!

And One more important Notice here. The Covid revealed that we have an Incompetent Government!

They allowed Tenants to steal under the law’s protection. It is when it is clear that it is Unconstitutional. Half of the people are living out of the others.

We don’t steal food because of the covid. We don’t have free rent because the Landlord is a private person. Tenants don’t have legal or moral rights to use the Landlords.

Our Government is waiting for a Revolution to start soon. Because the Landlords will take back their rights!

I am as a Landlord, believe that tenants who don’t care to pay the rent first, have to be removed on the street in 24 hours without the court!

If you steal in the store, you get arrested and removed without any court right on the spot, period…
