Has a recipient of the section 8 ehv voucher , I consider myself very fortunate to be able to secure an apartment but it wasn’t easy. I called and emailed hundreds of management companies, realtors, brokers, and different landlord and it took me 3 months to find an apartment. I’m a single mother of 2 years old to toddler twins so I was looking for a elevator building or an ground floor apartment , I ended up in a 4th floor walk-up with an apartment on the 4th floor because of the constant discrimination against voucher holders. When I was offered the apartment I took it even though I knew it’s going to be difficult with two toddler but I also know how difficult it is to find landlord that accepts the vouchers.

why should a landlord take a voucher that is time limited from a tenant that will not pay rent once the voucher expires? Eviction takes up to 24 months and during that time no rent will be collected. Its also the advocates like you who complains about lack of apartments yet demands the elimination of certain landlords’ inventory from the system. In essence the lack of inventory of affordable units is directly the fault of your approach to housing.

New York is the biggest racket in the world. Real estate and greed are masters. That there are thousands of empty buildings and zero enforcement of the legal requirement to rent to those with vouchers tells you all you need to know.

In addition the thousands that toughed it out during the worst of the pandemic— and the poor and hard working class that kept property afloat were tossed to the curb as soon as insanely lucrative tax breaks expired. In the latter take away affordable housing from those that supported you for decades — now that they are elderly or sick. They used to say NYC had a lot Of heart. Does it? Not feeling much gratitude or basic decency these days.

The city is making it hard for those who work for a living. They trying to move us working people who made Brooklyn what it is out, only our neighborhoods. The rents are astronomical and rent control board keeps raising them. My building was offered section 8 because the rents are going to be high. That’s crazy but we allowing new people to come here when they are not taking care of their own. Make it make sense

What I have learned as a graduate social work student is that we should look to do both. We must take care of our own and see to those impacted by troubles across the world. After all, what we leave undone/unattended comes back to bite us in the rear at the end.

I sent my paperwork in twice to renew my cityfheps voucher. They send notices to do it . So you do it and their response is to send a email to your land lord that they will not issue rent percentage payment anymore. This is crazy. I visited cityfheps office nyc. They tell me to disregard that. It was sent to all landlords because their computer system is backed up and checks will be issued February 14 2033. Today. Why can’t they fix this. I hope they pay. This is pushing people back to shelters and worse. And it sure doesn’t help with tenant and landlord relationship. I have a good relation with my landlord. But the city is wrecking it do to it’s lazy operation. Cityfheps office is a zoo and it’s workers are understaffed.
