Love this because I was in fact, one of them persons who almost got denied Shelter when I couldn’t give them three recent addresses of where I used to stay they denied me the first time, but gave me another opportunity to see if I can locate the person I was living with before I came to path mind you I was not even from New York. I was from a different state so I was in fact, homeless if I did not get in contact with the person I was staying with before I came. They would’ve denied Shelter and I believe that that is unfair because I wasn’t even from New York City so I was in fact homeless so I understand completely when someone comes and say they’re homeless you never know what their situation is. they couldn’t fact be homeless.

I have been homeless with my son and I can tell you firsthand the process is gut wrenching we were bounced around from shelter to shelter and once they denied us because they said we could sleep on my sister’s mother in laws couch. We were in system for 10 years total. When we first got there they had just dissolved a program and had to wait 3 years for them to start a new one. We moved out into an apartment in Brooklyn on that program where I would only pay 50 a month and the progr covered the rest. Well quietly for a whole year the government dis not pay the landlord and we were evicted. I didnt even have a chance to fight it in court. Then we went back and finally I argued for nycha and they got tired of me and now I have my 2 bedroom for over a decade. But it took 10 years to actually be stable. We started this process when my son was only 8 months old and left when he was about graduate elementary school. And yes I did work but it was just minimum wage and also housing discrimination is a thing so many landlords refused to rale the programs offered and they would send you listing of apartments that were already taken or you go to view an apartment like filed trip with people from other shelters. Its not easy and I was determined to get us out. I worked 2 jobs when I could but it was such a process. We lived in every borough except Staten Island and one time weere dropped off at the wrong shelter and when we finally did reach there was no one to let us in. Its not easy for homeless families in nyc.

With the knowledge that people come to NYC, just to be homeless, because of our easily accessible social safety net services, this bill is a horrible idea, it will only open the door wider to people who would come here and claim homelessness without having a really prove anything, thereby making it harder for New Yorkers, who actually need the help of these social services, to be shut out because of limited space. If the bill is introduced with protections for NYers, so that they can be prioritized, I’m all for it, but I have met too many homeless transients that refuse to leave NYC because HRA treats them better than where they came from. There should be a minimum residency requirement to receive social services or at least be prioritized for it.
