The most interesting thing about this article is the juxtaposition between the quote:

“What the Times doesn’t get, but the speaker does, is that these laws are merely aspirations. Much as they might be good for some laughs when cops get together to drink after their shift, they warm only the hearts of the most passionate progressive believers.”

and the Josmar Trujillo’s conclusion about abolition.

Why would he include this quote as evidence reforms are worthless because the cops will just laugh at them and only warm the hearts of liberals? Does he not think cops laugh at the thought of abolition? Is warming the hearts of “radicals” more effective or productive?

    I am for abolition.

But I hate the hypocrisy of this contrast.

This is about the most ignorant & preposterous suggestions I’ve heard to date! What then? When SHTF and cites need the Police? Oh that’s right! We abolished them! Why, so there can be open season rioting & looting for that weeks topic of news?
Gimme a damn break already & get a life people!

I have some questions for the writer of this op-ed piece:

    1) What alternative does he or others like him plan to have for dealing with serious cases of violence against others by others IF the police are abolished (shooting massacres like the 1989 École Polytechnique one in Montreal, or any other massacre of people involving guns)?

    2) Will whatever government that is elected due to this social revolution he wants to see happen come up with a alternate public security and safety framework/apparatus in case the goals mentioned in these points can’t be accomplished, (say, like U.N.C.L.E. or S.H.I.E.L.D.)?

    3) How will the needs of women being abused be helped by this concept, and would not reform of the police so that it is better as an organization be better than getting rid of it altogether?

    4) How would a police-less world deal with corporate crime, environmental crime, AND organized crime?

    5) What political party do you intend to support, or vote for, that will be able to carry any of the stated objectives (the Greens aren’t it, for the reasons mentioned here by Dan Savage-https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2016/07/19/24362128/dan-savage-on-jill-stein-just-no)?

I hope that these questions can be answered to the best ability, and not just brushed off because they’re uncomfortable to answer.
