This is a victory for mediocrity and mob rule. These tenants found for years that the conditions were good enough to stay for the price, but now they’ve renegotiated the past years of accepting the deal. They defty leveraged this nonsense government price-controlled rent stabilization scheme to their own favor. Some landlords will see this and realize that the only safe way to operate is to kick everyone out, build a new building, and be free of this mob-rule tenant ownership of other people’s property.

With 75% tenants in NYC, it’s no wonder that tenants have a lot of power, but this sort of thing is entirely ridiculous anywhere else in the world. With those numbers, even media outlets tow the line and root for this you-pay-for-me-to-live-here craziness. The City Limits will consistently talk about this as a “victory”.

I see it as a defeat of capitalism. 2019 was a terrible year for capitalism in real estate in NYS. If they keep this trend, landlord will be burning buildings again rather than filing bankruptcy like they did in the 1990’s.
