New City Rules Make It Harder to Access ‘Low-Barrier’ Homeless Shelters: Lawsuit

Instead of quibbling over intake policies, NYC needs to defund the Department of Homeless Services of its $1 billion+ per year and use the money to create affordable housing that’s actually affordable, with services for mental health, literacy, and employment skills.
Using the DHS budget this way would end homelessness in about 10 years.  Instead, the City has been shoveling billions to DHS for over 30 years to provide shelters that the homeless don’t even want to live in.

It’s heartbreaking to see policies that make it harder for the most vulnerable people to access shelter. Safe havens and stabilization beds are crucial for those experiencing street homelessness, and adding more barriers doesn’t help. Hopefully, this lawsuit leads to changes that prioritize compassion and support.
