For Your Calendar: NYC’s Mayoral Candidates Talk Immigration Policy

City Limits is partnering with the New York Immigration Coalition, THE CITY and Gotham Gazette for a mayoral forum May 6 where the candidates vying to be the city’s next mayor will discuss their immigration platforms.

More than 3 million immigrants call New York City home, accounting for more than a third of the population and more than 40 percent of its workers. The city’s foreign-born residents have experienced significant impacts and unique challenges over the last year, with immigrants accounting for approximately half of the essential workers staffing front-line operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to recent report from the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA).

The city’s next mayor will have the chance to influence policy on a number issues directly impacting immigrant New Yorkers. Immigration advocates and experts told City Limits last month that they’re looking to see where the candidates stand on things like access to healthcare, the NYPD’s interactions with immigration enforcement agencies, city support for legal assistance programs, expanding language access and translation services and whether to grant non-citizens the right to vote in municipal elections.

To get the answers to these and other questions, City Limits will participate in a virtual mayoral forum on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. where the Democratic mayoral candidates will get the chance to discuss their positions on issues impacting immigrants. Hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, City Limits’ Spanish-language reporter Daniel Parra will be one of the panelists asking questions at the event, alongside journalists from THE CITY and Gotham Gazette.
