Prior CLARIFY summer interns covering a press conference at City Hall.The City Limits Accountability Reporting Initiative for Youth (CLARIFY) is now accepting applications for its 2021 summer internship. This is a paid journalism training program for New York City high school students who will be entering either their junior or senior year of high school (11th and 12th grades) by the upcoming fall 2021 semester.
Launched by City Limits in 2014, CLARIFY teaches participants the ins-and-outs of reporting and news writing. Interns will spend four weeks learning investigative techniques, how to conduct research and interview sources; other lessons include media ethics, story structure, photojournalism and more. They’ll apply these skills as they report on important issues impacting their own communities, with the goal of getting those stories published in City Limits and in a student-produced newsletter.
Our previous youth interns have reported on the impact of the Second Avenue Subway expansion, how a key law in the city’s Vision Zero efforts failed to meet expectations, about persistent “litter hot spots” in the Bronx, the problems posed by the uptick in delivery truck traffic and about the challenges the city faced last summer in planning a COVID-19 vaccination program—many of which came to pass this year as a vaccine finally became available. They’ve covered community board meetings, press conferences at City Hall and interviewed countless lawmakers, advocates, activists and everyday New Yorkers. Due to safety concerns around the COVID-19 crisis, the Summer 2021 CLARIFY internship will be conducted remotely. The Deadline to apply is May 23.
