This is a tragedy. Staffing is one issue. Competent staffing and training is another. I work for the city an inefficiency seems to be the thing to do to claim they need more people. It’s about efficiency and competence. How about automation. Problem number one. Paper work won’t get lost is there is an electronic paper trail. How about having classes to educated the residents of the shelter about the process. That can be done by trying videos on demand on applications website. Or a portal with this information for all languages to tell them about the financial breakdown and requirements for apartments. You don’t need staff for that. Just a video on demand.
The problem her is too many of these agencies keep trying to figure out ways to milk the system by prolonging the stay of these residents especially the ones who are tryin their best to get out. This article didn’t address the staff the purposely mess up paperwork over and over again and still keep their jobs only to do it again to another client. How about looking into theses facilities and the people who handle paperwork. Yes there’s human era but they’re are also the only patterns in the inefficiency. We know where the problems are we just never fix it. We continue to let this happen.
Who’s handling payments again. Automatic payments. How can payments be late if the financial institutions just schedule payments. Why is it the payments are not going out. It’s 2022. Private corporations never have this issue so why does NYC agency always have an issue with payments. Even in my agency they constantly delay or mess up payments that should take days can take weeks or months. Incompetency with a extra helping of no oversight or incompetence in the oversight.

Now we are talking about people’s self respect and having someplace to call their home and we act like we don’t know why this is happening. It’s the way that NYC agencies functions. Why is it in the most popular so called advanced city in the world your agencies function like this? Even with more resources than most states we still fail.

Soo much that I have read is true. I’m in a shelter for men in the Bronx and I almost got an apartment until I caught my Case Manager lying to me about my budget letter not being sent to them for two months and I was able to get it in two weeks. Now I can’t get any help from BronxWorks staff for anything

I encourage everyone to stay vigilant, and PRAY! We may fall, but WE GET BACK UP. I found this passage on a platform. I hope it helps.

If you QUIT NOW….You’ll end up right back where you began.
And where you first began, you were desperate to be where you are, Right Now.
    Keep Going!
YOU are Visions of Hope. to me!

This is the exact thing I’m going through, I signed a lease weeks ago now they’re telling me I’m 60$ short,, this is an absolute nightmare, I can’t breath, I can’t sleep.. it’s been two years now stuck in the same place, I thought this was finally over but it’s not. I just want to die.

I am a Real Estate Broker and I have lost 10 rental listings because of housing specialist behavior and errors. It is very difficult convincing landlords and owners to rent to a homeless person or family and then once they agree, then problems happen and they change their minds. I had 3 units all single family homes with all docs and lease signed and the housing specialist talked her clients into taken a NYCHA project apt instead even though NYCHA approved them they still didn’t have a unit assigned yet, my unit was ready and the owners was very upset and cancel my deals. Another situation happened when the client signed the lease and a week later they changed their mind and I lost that deal as well. First off once a lease is signed that should seal the deal and no other units should be suggested or the client should not be able to change their mind once they comment to a unit. As brokers we work on commission only and this is why we don’t advocate for DHS rentals as much due to the lack of consideration from the broker’s side, we beg for the rental then someone in DHS messes the process up and all parties are affected and it leave a bad taste in broker’s and owner mouth.

I can relate, I signed my lease 3/16/2022. The housing specialist didn’t tell me what was going on with my case, or the status of my case until I went to her office a month later and she tells me that the pre clearance is missing, we are waiting for DHS……..WHAT??? Luckily, the management where I signed the lease is very patient and understanding.

I’ve been waiting to move out of my current situation. I found an apartment in July it’s now September 30 2022. I’m still awaiting a inspection I was supposed to have one done yesterday September 29 2022. But the whole entire office caught COVID. Now I have to be put off for another week. Mind you my voucher is up in November. So from this point I don’t know what to do. Being whichkid and not being able to prepare for your newborn is sicking. I really do hope all goes good at this point. I’ve been through enough. Pregnancy is the best thing in the world and not really being able to enjoy it is heartbreaking.

I’ve been selected to 3 set a side apartments by DHS and my housing specialist asking for my important documents to send alone with the application but she doesn’t get back to me on if I was accepted or not. What should I do.
