It’s heartening to know that children are both discovering and nurturing their Polish heritage and roots here in America.
But at the same tme it’s sad to see democratic institutions being assaulted in Poland by the current regime. It would indeed be a tragedy for Poland to lose the freedoms that it struggled for so many years to win.
Just like in America’sTrumpian nightmare, the voters in Poland were swayed by appeals to their worst instincts, instead of the better angels of their nature.
As the climate crisis so painfully illustrates: we are one world, with one ultimate fate. Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.
We Americans need to do out part to help Polish progressives in their struggles, before Poland becomes another fake authioitarian democracy like Hungary …or worse.
America used to be an inviting beacon of hope for the world, but under Trump we are pitied and scorned.
May a Biden administration be one that once again fosters democracy both at home and abriad, rather than one that admires & emulates dictators and would-be dictators who trash the rule of law.
