At least 102,000 senior citizens are on waiting lists for senior housing in New York City, according to a survey by LiveOn NY, an advocacy organization for older New Yorkers.
The survey received responses from 119 of the 276 buildings operated under Section 202, the federal senior-housing program. Based on that response rate, the survey projects that as many as 200,000 people might be on senior-housing waiting lists.
LiveOn supports Mayor de Blasio’s Zoning, Quality and Affordability amendments “which would facilitate the building of senior housing,” according to the report. The ZQA proposal, along with the mayor’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing (MIH) plan, have stirred controversy and been rejected by most community boards as they wind their way toward binding votes.
