I too was at the loud, rude, and angry crowd meeting on the 19th of July. For a very mixed crowd of people of all races and creeds I find your call of “racist and classist” very upsetting. It seems that is your banner cry when people do not want to see Rikers inmates in their neighborhood. I have been down 141st and seen the building and the wandering souls walking about. What is the Fortune Society’s success rate on helping these ex-inmates. I saw the heart grabbing of the video of elderly woman with the cane that would have nowhere to go if not of the Castle project. I also hear Community District 11 is currently the only district in the Bronx without a Department of Homeless Services shelter, further proving that Morris Park and the surrounding areas are not doing their fair share. No one will talk about the Methadone clinic that has been at 1500 Waters Place for many years. Now we have a new project of 1,000 plus migrant going to Orchard Beach in tents. Will this mean we are doing our fair share. Mayor Adams says they will only be there for a maximum of 96 hours. Want to place bets. Plus, none will escape. Some of these men (it is only for men) have crossed multiple borders; you don’t think they will find a way out. The lovely photo at the top of this article is Jacobi Medical Center not the building in question. The building inside the complex over looks local street of Seminole Ave where I live for 50 years. I would love to have the little old lady from Harlem or even migrant families with kids to do my fair share. Since no one can tell us that convicted rapist, child molesters or murders won’t be in the mix of inmates at the site, how can you think people feel safe.
