Congress Should Respect Puerto Rico’s Vote for Statehood? How about saying instead Congress should respect the self determination of Puerto Ricans, who for the past 69 years have repudiated Statehood in favor of the Commonwealth option.

The premise of this article is a lie. In the past 8 years, Puerto Rico has NOT voted for Statehood, unless you consider that in the plebiscites of 2017 and 2020, 22.5% and 26% of the eligible voters voted for it, respectively.

Election results are never reported anywhere based on eligible voters. They are reported based on people who actually voted. The vote was free and fair. The status vote was even held on general election day so more people would participate. Statehood beat all the other options combined, including no option at all. Enough with trying to keep Puerto Rico colonized.

They chose not to vote. That is their

Dear; President Biden / Vice President Harris The American citizens in Puerto Rico are counting on you to finally correct the wrong in our history that our past leaders have done. Not forgetting about the negative political past but looking at how far American politics has been changing in a positive manner with intelligent leaders making a difference to better the lives and reshape the future for the American people we the people of Puerto Rico we The people The Last Colony In American History We The People Who are a Part of The American Story Who have sacrificed our entire lives from the beginning of the American Revolution to World War 1 and in spite of all this history we are still struggling to become a state of This Our Great Nation., If you believe in civil rights if you believe it’s true in what has been written here you know why you are in the position you are today and that is to continue to fight for Democracy to set the example and show the world that their will no longer be any obstacles for our American citizens in Puerto Rico. Statehood vote has won legitimately three times and it has been ignored by our congress that is not Democracy., We are counting on 117th congress speaker of the House and all the men and woman in congress President and Vice President to make this change for ones and for all this year because the people already voted lets make history together again just like the President did with our vice President lets take care of our American Brothers and Sisters of Puerto Rico and Together we could make America Greater and more Prosperous.

Great point, Miguel. Puerto Rico’s political status has to be resolved once and for all. Their preference has been spoken many times, most recently in 2020. The will of those who voted and received a majority vote should prevail (in this case-statehood won). Congress has to act now, not 200 years in the future. Option 1: Statehood, option 2: full Independence. One of those options will finally resolve Puerto Rico’s political status. So, Congress, Act NOW!
