This all makes perfect sense, and it explains the widespread phobia of supertalls. But it doesn’t explain resistance to two- or three-story buildings in suburbs, or buildings in Manhattan that are no taller than nearby buildings.

I’ve never read such nonsense. 8.8 Million people is more than enough for NYC to safely handle owing to our 100+ year old infrastructure.

Everyone is NIMBY when it is THEIR Backyard.

Not surprising this article is written by a real-estate developer, a prominent YIYBY = Yes, In YOUR Backyard (just as long as it is not mine.)

He should stick to real estate speculation and back off from evolutionary biology, of which he has no pedigree, and refrain from pop culture misuse of it.

Moreover, if he wants to persuade people, generically labelling community activists and preservationists with childish prejorative names, coined by a stand-up comedian, (like George Carlin’s nimby), discredits any argument he has.

The effort to build more housing should focus on the so-called “missing middle”. Housing of 3 to 6 stories focused outside of Manhattan. In Manhattan the focus should be on contextual buildings on the remaining two and three story building sites.

Unlike say the District of Columbia, New York has no legal process to efficiently empty small buildings for demolition and replacement with more housing. We need a law to guarantee replacement housing at the same prices for tenants so that landlords can empty smaller buildings and demolish them.
