421-a is the practice of government exersabiating the ever-increasing equity between corporate developers and people who need housing in NYC. The public benefits received under the program are questionable as the article points out.

421-a handed off power and funding to the corporations who then administer “reduced-rate” rentals as they control rental rates in the first place. All asset development aided by 421-a spending benefits the corporate bottenline and enhances their power over the housing system. This is pure Neo Liberal policy. The corporations are put in the driver seat between the government housing-aid policy and the people receiving such aid.

Neo Liberalism is about government handing over resources and control to corporations, side stepping any direct aid to those government claims to be helping. What we have seen from decades of the 421-a implementation of such Neo Liberal policy in NYC has been an ever increasing growth of corporate power and wealth while those who such policies claimed to assist struggle more than before such policy was in place.

So to be clear, 421-a policy is Neo-Liberal policy. Any elected who supports such policy is a Neo Liberal. We should all be watching how so-called “progressive” electeds package their “aid” programs as they claim to be helping working people. 421-a is no “equity sharing” program as some of our electeds keep telling saying.

Please don’t blame the entire NYC housing crisis on Neo-Liberals. Aren’t we just talking about market forces (the invisible hand)? If there are roughly 2 million apartments in the Five Boroughs, and 1 million of those are rent controlled/rent stabilized, then the Liberals, over many decades, have created a ‘club’ of ‘those who have been here the longest’. I have many wealthy friends with incredible deals on their rent stabilized apartments Government interference has (as usual) caused unexpected outcomes. Let’s not even start on how landlords were severely shunted by the (still on going) eviction moratorium. Surely we all agree that the last thing we want is the NYC Government 100% responsible for providing all rental accommodation. Just refer to de Blasio’s record with NYCHA for that outcome.

Is obesity how government officials cover corporate welfare with fancy terms like abatements. It’s just a sign of craving mechanisms for the rich to get richer and the poor to stay poorer!!!
