An absolutely bad idea. It’s still going to be extremely expensive create a safe legal basement apartment, which means few landlords will be stupid enough to try it. Lander has too much time in his hands and how is this proposal even a concern for our Comptroller? What does the NYCDOB have to say about this?

This housing plan can help college students who need to live alone or without roommates who are thieves or parents who are high on drugs. These homes are a subway stop or bus stop away from the college campuses without enough dorm space. The students would probably only live there until they graduate. So there is an option to convert the apartment back into a basement without occupancy.

The City Comptroller needs to do the work of the City Comptroller.

Egregious that Brad Lander is spending his time and staff on politics.
Seems like a conflict of interest too.

There is no doubt that politician don’t to help Homeowners, not all of them are bad, the needs are there, there are already 50,000 plus illegal units, so there should a plan to help the homeowner to legalize the basement in order to make it safe to the tenant and these 50,000 could be reduce to the minimum. but not doing anything is worse.
