NYC Faces Uphill Climb in Vaccinating Older New Yorkers

My experience is just that — my experience. Most of us are familiar with the caution that the plural of “anecdote” isn’t “data” and I don’t even have multiple anecdotes. With that in mind, my experience thus far with NYC’s system has been good.

I’m in the age group that became eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine with the Jan 12 NY State policy change. Chance / luck, I tried NYC’s system rather than the state system. Yes, I encountered multiple questions, but this is a medical procedure. If the vaccine were available from my personal doctor (it isn’t) or from a pharmacy with which I have a relationship (it isn’t), they’d know my medical history. Without that prior relationship, these questions weren’t merely the responsible thing to do; they were essential.

The vaccine site nearest to me was about 2 miles away at a public school, not a medical facility. I made an appointment for my first vaccine dose for Fri 22 Jan. On Wed 20 Jan, I received messages (both email and telephone) informing me that because of lack of vaccine, my appointment was rescheduled for today (29 Jan) same time and place. This morning, I had to answer some additional medical questions. With that, I received a confirmation number. With this number in hand, the actual vaccination process took barely 30 minutes and it included scheduling my second dose.

Yes, I have a computer with which I’m modestly literate. Yes, I have mid-range broadband access. No, I don’t have a smart phone or a tablet. And a 2-mile round-trip when the temp is well below freezing (good for the vaccine / maybe not so much for humans) isn’t — for me — a challenge.

Can the city improve this process? Yes, but with physical distancing, “outreach” is tricky. Person-to-person contact is barely on the menu. I was pleased to read vaccines are or will be available at some NYCHA sites. People will see their neighbors getting vaccinated. This will help boost acceptance. Perhaps these same NYCHA sites can assist making vaccine appointments.

I’m a 75 Year Old and my expirience in getting the vaccine has been excellent, I waited online for about 45 min. The check in people were helpful. I’m proud of all the work our politicians are doing to get everyone vaccinated. Mayor Deblasio, and Governor Cuomo have done a superb job in keeping the virus at bay, and not affecting too many New Yorkers. This is what progress looks like.
