I have worked security in Maryland for many years and I have had orientation anywhere from 1- 5 days plus OJT of up to 5 days while this is not how it’s done in New York we were well trained for whatever site we worked. This was done by the security company is much better way of doing things. When I was under contract with NIH all guards had to meet federal government regulations, including but not limited to safety classes, red cross first aid and CPR training handcuff and baton training while this may as a different way to do things you don’t have to worry about schools which don’t follow procedures

Very informative, thanks for sharing. For me, security guard job requires the lots of responsibilities as the security guard has to take responsibilities of our properties and even sometimes of our lives. They have run to the affected area quickly to save endangered people. They have to be smart, first dedicated and active. For all of this this kind of high quality training is required.

what needs to be done is how its done for drivers license at the DMV MAKE ROOMS FOR THIS THERE now DMV will do the 8hr testing an all the others at the DMV facilities or at a DMV separate facility, with that making it controlled by the state not by private security companies, dwindling people.make update there are all types of security ,security all do different things dealing with different people, hospital security is different from supermarket security , bar security isn’t Walmart security that said the security training videos have to change security needs peace officer status because security also gets attacked and doing that makes it a safer for the city everywhere not just New York but other states. adding that if this is done with DMV this will make jobs an eliminate the corruption under the city eyes linking the DMV with security jobs so its one entity like the police, making it New York security.. APB SECURITY AN SECURITAS ARE TOO GOOD SECURITY AGENCIES TO WORK FOR BUT SECURITAS ATTIRE IS SLOPPY APB IS CLEAN ATTIRE PROFESSIONAL an that said security needs a presence not 2 ft tall but a look of professionalism.in boxing theres a weight class thats how security should be depending on the environment

The annual 8hours is a money making machine for the state.
I think after the initial 8 hours to obtain your security license, the eight hours should be done every two years the same as your License ..

The unfortunate problem is the State does not get any of the money charged at a class, all the money goes to the school.

I agree, Mike. It doesn’t seem to make any sense that you have to take an 8-hour every single year. It seems logical to me when you renew your license every two years that’s when you should take your 8-hour, not every year.

In New York State, the functions and the definitions of who and what a security guard is stated by the Secretary of State and the Security Guard Advisory Council (7-A of the security guard act, sections 89-O,71(3)). It clearly states the function of the security guard. If the client is adding to that definition and enlarging those functions, that is where the problems come in. Yes, they are poorly trained, but even more nefarious is that most guards believe they have powers they don’t. They tend to act like thugs if you don’t listen to them. I find it funny whenever most people speak about the LAW, they never tell you which law it is! It should be incumbent that everyone who takes on a responsibility of “AUTHORITY” real or imagined actually know those laws etc…which will affect them and the public at large!
