The data in this article are testiments to the fact that the Department of Corrections is a source income (employees and taxes) and not an institution of correction/reform. Or it is just a show to allow for some higher ups to give themselves pats on the back. Why else would there be more talk about animal shelter and living conditions of livestock than the living conditions and treatment individuals in correctional facillities? Are they not more valuable than stray animals and those we consume for sustenance?

Lots of nice words, but not once did the article explain why Mr. Jackson had spent so much time in Keeplock/SHU status during his incarceration. That’s the problem with these articles – lots of numbers of people in “solitary” but no explanations of why. Also never any suggestions on what to do with inmates who refuse to obey the rules and regulations of the facilities. Thank GOD for the SHU’s and the ability to lock up inmates in their cells – it sure helped cure a lot of violence in the 1990’s and 2000’s.

Let me agree somewhat, without really knowing what you are referring to that went down in the 90s and 00s, and in my ignorance, assume you are right that certain people were protected from violence by others thanks to prisons. Though in my personal experience justice is often not served, I am just a single individual and won’t assume that in other circumstances the law courts and maybe even police can be just. Regardless, I wouldn’t say locking people up “cured” violence since I would consider being locked in a cage, especially in solitary confinement, a kind of violence that in itself perpetuates violence. Because doing harm to another increases suffering, increases one’s sense that they need to look out for number 1. You might notice that on days when you struggle more & it seems no one is kind, it is much harder to be kind in return. Imagine if your whole life is seeped in cruelty and basic survival. Perhaps it already has been & you know exactly what I mean. So, what is the real “cure” for violence? Definitely it must be a change in attitude from a selfish mindset to a compassionate one. Which doesn’t start with the other person- it always starts with ourself. Considering where a person’s criminal behaviour stems from is very important to develop compassion because then we might realise our priorities should not perhaps be vengeance & torture but mental health resources, positive social connections, basic resources like food/clean water/medicine etc.

The issue or point of this article is not to put his cause of disciplinary action during incarnation there, but to give the public, the legislation, family, friends, and The Department of Correction the truth of how its system of reform is backfiring. Societies ideas of addressing an incarcerated individual infraction and disciplinary recorce is making for more problematic individual. Isolation from human interaction and limiting the activity of the human mind is in itself abuse and, therefore a contradiction to the term “rehabilitation.” This is one of many who has suffered from the behavior that does not agree with the laws, however, was it the thought of the law makers to intentionally inflict mental damage outside of his sentence or create an individual whom when released (if he makes it) to be a person in need of more help now than when he was sentenced? We are human beings and we are still learning from one another as this is how we connect to engage and interact. The studies are in the fact vs. fiction have been studies and will continue to be there.
