Its a shame how this dss/dhs shelter are being run .Ceo Renee Mitchell of Breaking The Cycle Drop Corp. Said you need to change the narrative. You need wrap around service on site including medical so you can deal with homeless client with medical issues . But im beginning to think you dont want a program that work. Cause then these big corporation won’t be able to milk the system

    Whatever became of Camp LaGuardia?

Each day I say hello to Jose a local homeless person near my home. I asked him why he’s not in one of NYC’a wonderful homeless shelters? “Not as safe as the streets!

Anyway if you’re retired and homeless you’ve really missed the boat. Camp LaGuardia was nice.

I am unclear why there is not more coordination between the shelter systems for older adults and Assisted Living (ALP’s) facilities. Individuals on SSI are able to receive a SSI supplement that will allow them to pay an ALP’s fees. They are able to receive IADL and ADL assistance, 3 meals, RN medication coordination and can keep $200 a month in spending money. There should be a cost comparison on how much it costs to keep one individual in the shelter for a year versus how much it costs to keep him/her in an ALP. There are ALP’s in every borough with availability. Of course, most will have to have a roommate. However, it can be a stop-gap to individuals on waitlists for affordable housing (as opposed to shelters) and it is considered “community living.” In other countries, people do not have a choice to wait in a shelter while the housing they want is available to them. There should be more coordination between the department of homeless services and other housing options; ALP’s, Family Type Homes, NHTD, TBI, Money Follows the Person…and housing choices, so long as it is safe and can accommodate the individuals needs may need be with the “paying party.”
